GABRIEL GRAIN
LEAD CHEMIST
Gabriel knows every
word to "Fiddler on the
Roof"

Gabriel Grain, 28, is Variant Labs’ lead chemist. His career nearly stalled early on, long before he had the chance to prove what he was capable of.
Before joining Variant Labs, Gabriel worked for one of Zion’s largest corporations, where layoffs had become part of the routine. Employees were cut loose without warning. Whole departments vanished overnight, and years of loyalty meant about as much as the nameplate left behind on an empty desk. Gabriel was one of many talented workers pushed aside by a system too massive to care who it was crushing.
At the time, Gabriel and his wife, Eden, were trying to figure out what came next, worried for the future, when the two of them happened to catch a Variant Labs hiring advertisement on television. One position in particular stood out immediately: lead chemist. It was the once in a lifetime opportunity Gabriel had been hoping for, even if he didn’t fully believe he deserved it. He had the knowledge for the role, but years of being overlooked made it hard for him to see that.
Gabriel always described his application process as confusing. He had applied for work he had dreamed about for years, only to be hired because Adrian claimed he had a “gut feeling” about him. At the time, that did not feel flattering. It felt strange and a little too sketchy to trust.

Since then, Gabriel has become one of the laboratory’s most essential scientific minds. As lead chemist, his role centers on the analysis and formulation of compounds tied to Variant Labs’ most interesting discoveries, translating unstable or unknown materials into something the rest of the lab can study and eventually apply in practical ways. His work has been especially important in helping shape the formula behind AAVARION, where his chemical expertise has played a major part in refining the properties that made the product possible in the first place.
Personality-wise, Gabriel is all frayed nerves and bitten-back comments. He’s deeply anxious, constantly tense, and still somehow quick enough with a dry remark to make everyone around him regret opening their mouth. His nervous energy makes him easy to pick on, but his sarcasm makes him hard to actually corner.
One of the more ridiculous running jokes around the lab is the rumor that his loving marriage to Eden is somehow a beard for his “true sexuality.” Nobody seriously believes it, but that has not stopped Butch Wilhelm from keeping an active bet going with Baron over it.

Gabriel usually handles the jackassery the same way he handles everything else: with a dry comment, a tired little salute, and then right back to work.
