Matthew Henderson, 47, was one of Variant Labs’ most recognizable Human Resources representatives, remembered for his work in employee communication across the company’s wider network.

 

Originally from Eastland, a distant region of Tundra with a mixed population and little trace of a traditional Zion accent, Matthew grew up around travelers, foreign workers, and people who had come from far beyond the usual borders. Being raised there gave him a patient way of dealing with others, especially those who felt out of place or unsure of themselves.

Eastland also became one of the most important places in Matthew’s personal life. It was there that he gained custody of Zenneth and Elias Vanguard from a family friend, taking in two young boys who would later become closely tied to Variant Labs’ communications and employee relations work. Matthew rarely spoke in detail about that chapter, but those who knew him understood how deeply it stayed with him, and how much it shaped the boys.

Before Variant Labs, Matthew built a reputation as a dependable administrative and communications specialist. His work often took him across different regions and climates, from the colder stretches of Tundra to harsher industrial environments. Though he kept himself fairly healthy, constant travel wore him down over time, leaving him with recurring sickness and the strain of always being between places.

At Variant Labs and Variant Communications, Matthew became best remembered for his Human Resources work and internal training material. He helped produce staff welcome recordings, employee guidance tapes, safety modules, and onboarding videos that became a familiar part of the Variant Labs experience. Even if many of those recordings are now marked as OUTDATED_TRAINING, and even if Adrian forced them into use more than anyone asked for, Matthew’s voice left a mark on the company no one could really deny. 

 

Matthew was polite and dry-humored, with a habit of noticing things people tried to hide. He never tried to intimidate anyone. He paid attention to the small signs instead: a nervous glance, or a question someone clearly wanted to ask but couldn’t bring themselves to say. Matthew usually caught it without needing much explanation.

His passing at age 47 hit Variant Labs hard, especially those who had worked beside him in Human Resources and communications. For Zenneth and Elias, the loss cut deeper. Matthew had been more than a colleague or mentor. He had been family.

 

Matthew Henderson is remembered as a dedicated representative, a trusted guardian, and one of the earliest voices that helped shape Variant Labs from the inside. His contributions remain buried in the company’s foundation, still present in old training files and the lives of the people he helped guide while he was there.
