Zenneth Vanguard, currently in his mid-twenties, serves as one of Variant Labs’ Human Resources representatives and internal operations coordinators. For most employees, they tend to learn quickly that arguing with him rarely ends in their favor.

He originally came from the southern dry heat of Dakota, close to a border region where Zion’s influence had already started pressing into the land. His father worked under contract for Zion as a firefighter, which placed the family close to the edge of two different worlds. Dakota was home, but Zion was always near enough to shape what life looked like.

Zenneth learned early that systems could decide whether a person survived or got swallowed. Paperwork mattered. Leverage mattered. So did tone, timing, and knowing when to stop speaking. While other children were still learning how to get through the day, Zenneth was already watching how adults handled power and fear.

Life in Dakota was not gentle to him or Elias. The twins stood out because of their accents, and that made them easy targets for children who treated difference like a weakness. When they later ended up in Eastland under Matthew Henderson’s care, that feeling of being out of step did not disappear overnight. It simply changed shape.

​

Even as a child, Zenneth was the more calculated of the twins. Elias clung closer to comfort, while Zenneth studied whatever might help them stay afloat.

His relationship with Elias remains one of the most important parts of his life. Though the twins differ greatly in temperament, they are tied together by a shared history of sadness and survival.
